Devil’s Den- One of Florida’s Prehistoric Springs
When a lot of people think “Florida” the first thing that comes to mind may be a certain mouse, alligators, or possibly, their desired retirement spot. After living down here for some time now, I have discovered that, while these things are certainly present, there are a staggering variety places to see and things to do outside of anything I imagined was here. From beautiful state parks, full of abundant flora and fauna, to bustling metro centers with all the shopping one could desire, Florida will surprise you when you look around a bit.
We first discovered Devil’s Den three years ago while looking for new things to do in our new home state. First impressions mean a lot and both the staff and the facility itself left a great one! Everyone from the safety instructor to the managers are friendly and eager to assist. The facility itself is clean and has a ton to explore. There are walking paths, camping accommodations, and swimming areas including the Den, a pool, and a man-made lake for divers. Yes, I said divers. If you are SCUBA certified, there are a few options for you on the property including the Den, the lake area, and a cave system. For those of us who are not quite at that level, the sinkhole spring area offers an awesome snorkeling experience.
How long has this facility been here?
The current owners purchased the property in 1993 and have been updating and developing it ever since.
Is the Den a natural or man-made feature?
Devil’s Den is a naturally occurring sinkhole cavern that is fed by the Florida Aquifer.
How is the water temperature?
Since it is a natural spring, the water remains 72 degrees year-round.
