Road Trip: Australia (Brisbane to Cairns) Part 3
Once again we were on the road with only 962 kl to go. Just two more hops toi our destination. Only a few kilometers in, we decided that make one more detour and stop at Airlie Beach as it had been highly recommended from several sources. Good job Billboards, you did your job on some very tired tourists.
It was at this moment that I was brave enough to try this Aussie staple…Vegemite!
For years, I have wanted to try Vegemite. Maybe it was due to the fact that I watched WAY too much Rocket Power as a kid and Tito always talked about how good it was. We had a nice 8-hour drive so I said “what the heck, why not.” Vegemite has a very interesting smell, texture, and taste. It was quite unique and not what I expected. The ingredients indicated that it was a by-product of beer brewing. It was very (VERY) salty and had the consistency and coloration of shoe polish. I was not a personally fan of Vegemite but so many people love it. If you go to Australia, you must try it for yourself and see if you like it!
After the 8 hours drive, we finally arrived at Airlie beach. It was a very cute town with lots of things to do and great photo opportunities. Since Eric and I were on a schedule, we decided just to walk around the beach. Note: When we went to some of the shops, the prices for souvenirs and food were a bit on the pricey side. However, if you go to some of the restaurants surrounding the city the prices were a little bit more reasonable.
When we got to Airlie beach we saw that the tide was out and decided it would be a fun idea to walk out and see if we could find some unique seashells.
Little did we know we almost got stuck out there. Less than 10 minutes into our walk about the beach, the tide came back in quickly and hard.

We scrambled back to shore as quickly as possible and no more than 3 minutes later the sea came back to reclaim its territory. Note: Be sure to research to know the high and low tide times so as not to get stranded too far from shore when it comes back in.
After a bit more exploring along the ocean side, we settled into our hotel. But not before snapping a beautiful picture of our first Aussie sunset over the ocean.
